Hello, Beautiful | Theatre WorksSmall acts inspire life changing moments. Random acts of kindness and encouragement do not go astray. In this case scribbled graffiti on pavements in Fitzroy, Melbourne has made the title of Hannie Rayson’s one-woman show come to life.

Hello, Beautiful! is a series of short episodes from the life of playwright Rayson, arguably best known for penning Hotel Sorrento.

In a one-hour show directed by Matthew Lutton, Rayson charms her audience with tales of her own life. She is more accustomed to writing about others in plays such as Life After George, Room to Move and The Swimming Club, to name but a few. In Hello, Beautiful! she reveals pivotal moments in her own life. Some are funny, some revealing and one sad. All are captivating. Rayson is obviously a born story-teller. She manages to entwine threads of humour and irony throughout her narrative. The staging is simple and effective with a desk, overhead projector and small self-standing bookshelf.

This production provides insights into Rayson’s own life and is likely to appeal to anyone who has fond memories of Melbourne’s inner suburbs. It is palpably Australian, not surprising given Rayson’s voice as one of the contemporary Australian playwrights. She made playwriting history when Life After George was the first play to be nominated for the Miles Franklin Award.

Hello, Beautiful! communicates more than Rayson and Australia’s creative landscape. It is personal. The most outstanding message seems to be that life – personal and creative - can turn on a pivot depending on the people encountered and the events that occur.

Hello, Beautiful! is an edited version of her book of the eponymous title but the play is up close and personal and a rich and rewarding opportunity to meet the playwright on the stage.

Young efficiently managed various costume changes to transport us to different eras of the Bush legacy. The vocals are consistently of a high-quality, even through the demands of some very physical dancing to a backing track.
